The College Football Playoff National Championship is in New Orleans on January 13th. The two semifinals will be on December 28th, with one the PlayStation Fiesta Bowl in Glendale, Arizona, and the other the Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl in Atlanta.
In the New Year’s Six games – no matter what – the Rose Bowl will be a Big Ten team vs. a Pac-12 team, the Sugar Bowl will be a Big 12 vs. SEC matchup.
An ACC team will go to the Orange Bowl to face either Notre Dame, or the highest-ranked available SEC or Big Ten team not in the Sugar or Rose, respectively, or the CFP.
It all means the top champion from the Group of Five programs will play in the Cotton Bowl – if it’s not in the College Football Playoff – vs. the top-ranked at-large team.
Now, before going forward …
There aren’t enough bowl games. Everyone might scream about how many bowls there are, but at least going by the initial projections of how the season will go, several teams will be left out of the mix … maybe.
This almost always works out – especially for the Power Five programs – so if your team isn’t currently in these Bowl Projections, don’t get into a twist. Bowls tend to bend over backwards to break their contractual tie-ins to get the big boys in. So Arizona, Arizona State, Cal and Maryland fans, relax. Get to six wins, and someone will find a home for you. However …
Some Power Five leagues don’t have enough bowl tie-ins. The Pac-12 only has seven bowl slots and should have anywhere between eight to ten eligible teams. That might be an issue, but it’s worse for the Group of Five leagues. Miami University, Middle Tennessee, Temple, UAB and Utah State fans, if your team gets to seven wins, you’ll go bowling somewhere. Six, and it gets dicey.

New Year’s Six Bowls Schedule
GoodYear Cotton Bowl Classic
Saturday, December 28
12:00 ET, ESPN
AT&T Stadium, Arlington, TX
at-large vs. at-large
Projection: UCF vs. Georgia
Other Top Options: Boise State, San Diego State, Houston, LSU, Florida
Last Season: Clemson 30, Notre Dame 3
Boise State, Houston and San Diego State are the other top options from the Group of Five world to slide into the automatic New Year’s Six slot, but the call is that UCF will beat Houston in the American Athletic Conference title game to get here. UCF played LSU last season in the Fiesta, and Georgia isn’t the right call to go against Texas in the Sugar – a rematch of last year’s New Year’s Six game. It’ll be either LSU or Georgia, and the CFP won’t want a repeat from last season.
Capital One Orange Bowl
Monday, December 30
8:00 ET, ESPN
Hard Rock Stadium, Miami Gardens, FL
ACC vs. Big Ten or SEC
Projection: Miami vs. LSU
Other Top Options: Clemson, Virginia, Ohio State, Michigan, Georgia, Florida
Last Season: Alabama 45, Oklahoma 34
The ACC gets an automatic bid here. Assuming Clemson is off to the College Football Playoff, Virginia, Virginia Tech and Miami are the next best options. The Big Ten has to send a team to the Rose Bowl, likely taking away the No. 2 team, and calling that the champ will end up in the CFP. Michigan State would be a nice pick here, but the top SEC teams will rank higher in the final College Football Playoff rankings. Florida is the no-brainer if the matchup is against someone other than Miami, since the two start out the season on August 24th.
2019 Predictions For Every Game
ACC | Big Ten | Big 12 | Pac-12 | SEC
AAC | C-USA | Ind | MAC | M-West | Sun Belt
Rose Bowl
Wednesday, January 1
5:00 ET, ESPN
Rose Bowl, Pasadena, CA
Big Ten vs. Pac-12
Projection: Ohio State vs. Utah
Other Top Options: Michigan, Oregon, Washington
Last Season: Ohio State 28, Washington 23
It would be a blast if Utah could make it to its first ever Rose Bowl against the defending bowl game champ. The call is for the Ohio State-Michigan winner to end up in the College Football Playoff, and the loser to have a nice consolation prize of Pasadena. A Buckeye Rose Bowl rematch against Washington is a possibility, and Oregon should be deep in the mix, too.
AllState Sugar Bowl
Wednesday, January 1
8:45 ET, ESPN
Mercedes-Benz Stadium, New Orleans, LA
Big 12 vs. SEC
Projection: Florida vs. Texas
Other Top Options: Georgia, LSU, Oklahoma, TCU
Last Season: Texas 28, Georgia 21
The Big 12 champion will go likely go on to the College Football Playoff, and the loser would end up in the league’s automatic spot in the Sugar Bowl. Since LSU and Texas play early in the season, take out the Tigers if the Longhorns are in. However, if it’s anyone else – especially Oklahoma – LSU would be a dream team. Since the call is for Miami to make the Orange, and there’s no need for a rematch with Florida, the Gators would be the right fit here.

2019-2020 College Football Playoff Schedule
PlayStation Fiesta Bowl
Saturday, December 28
4:00 or 8:00 ET, ESPN
University of Phoenix Stadium, Glendale, AZ
CFP vs. CFP
Projection: Oklahoma vs. Clemson
Other Top Options: Alabama, Georgia, Ohio State, Michigan
Last Season: LSU 40, UCF 32
In some configuration, Clemson vs. Oklahoma will be the 2 vs. 3 in the College Football Playoff matchup in a rematch of the 2015 Orange Bowl – a 37-17 Deshaun Watson win over Baker Mayfield’s Sooners. The assumption is that Clemson or Alabama will get the one seed, and Oklahoma will roll through the back half of its season with the momentum to avoid the No. 4 spot for the second year in a row.

Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl
Saturday, December 28
4:00 or 8:00 ET, ESPN
Mercedes-Benz Stadium, Atlanta, GA Hard Rock Stadium, Miami, FL
CFP vs. CFP
Projection: Alabama vs. Michigan
Other Top Options: Clemson, Oklahoma, Georgia, Ohio State
Last Season: Florida 41, Michigan 15
Alabama or Clemson will end up with the top seed, with the projection that the Tide finishes unbeaten and rolling into the tournament … again. The other call is for the Michigan-Ohio State winner to go on to win the Big Ten title and get in at 12-1. The game is in Ann Arbor, and this should finally be the year for Jim Harbaugh finish it off.
So let’s do this. The showdown in New Orleans will be …
College Football Playoff National Championship
Monday, January 13
8:00 ET, ESPN
Mercedes-Benz Stadium, New Orleans, LA
CFP vs. CFP
Projection: Alabama vs. Oklahoma
Other Top Options: Clemson, Georgia, Ohio State
Last Season: Clemson 44, Alabama 16
Yeah, yeah, yeah, Clemson vs. Alabama is easy, but Oklahoma is way overdue to finally catch a big break, crack the code, and get into the College Football Playoff National Championship after giving it a shot three times so far.
And come on … Jalen Hurts vs. Alabama in New Orleans with a chance to take his legendary status to a whole new level? Ratings-wise, it would be amazing.
And Clemson vs. Alabama wouldn’t be bad, either.
It’s going to be a fun year.
