Australian motorsport icon John Bowe will race in a support category at the season-opening Supercars event in Bathurst this weekend despite his recent cancer diagnosis.

Bowe has been undergoing treatment since revealing earlier this month he'd been diagnosed with prostate cancer.

At the time the 66-year-old was unsure what the diagnosis would mean for his immediate racing prospects but confirmed on Facebook he'll compete in the Australian Touring Car Masters races at Mount Panorama this weekend.

"I'm going to be at Bathurst," the two-time Bathurst 1000 winner posted.

"I haven't felt great since my initial procedure for Prostate Cancer, but it's very random so I'm going to give the racing a crack, mainly because it's Bathurst.

"If I can't do it I have a Plan B, but I'm hoping not to have to use it."

Bowe is a five-time Australian Touring Car Masters champion and made 225 starts during his Supercars career, with 15 wins and 51 podium finishes.

With radiation treatment to resume on March 2, whether Bowe will compete in future events of the championship after this weekend's races in Bathurst is unknown.
