Bournemouth 0-0 Newcastle United: Premier League – as it happened

And with that it seems all the juice has been squeezed from this game, so I’ll be off. Bye!

Billy Munday has filed his match report from the Vitality Stadium, and here it is:

This season will once again be a balancing act for Eddie Howe. Newcastle struggled to adapt to the schedule during their first Champions League campaign for two decades in 2023-24 and there is a clear strategy to manage workloads this time around. Three days after defeat by Barcelona at St James’ Park, a goalless draw for Howe here on his return to Bournemouth to face a side in good form will feel like a job well done.

The other Premier League 2pm kick-off has also ended in a draw, the final score Sunderland 1-1 Aston Villa.

Final score: Bournemouth 0-0 Newcastle

90+5 mins: It ends, as it would have had they played all day, without a goal.

90+4 mins: A bad pass from Newcastle gives the ball to Bournemouth, from whom a bad pass gives it back again.

90+2 mins: That leads to a corner, which leads to another corner. The last four minutes have involved four set pieces and a combined total of perhaps 20 seconds of ball-in-play time.

90+1 mins: An actual shot! And an actual save! Kluivert’s effort is firm and dipping, but it’s still an easy enough save for Pope. Still, the second half has a shot on target! And there’ll be five minutes of stoppage time.

90 mins: Another set piece! The clearance drops to Christie, whose vicious volley hits a Newcastle arm. Free kick on the edge of the D, and surely this time they’ll have a shot.

89 mins: Bournemouth have a free-kick on the left. If something’s going to happen, it’ll probably be from a set piece, and this is one. Kluivert sends it into the six-yard box, where not a single home player is waiting.

87 mins: This has apparently had the lowest xG of any Premier League game this season, which is not at all surprising.

84 mins: Thiaw is being taken out of the firing line, and Jamaal Lascelles is coming on. Newcastle also bring Will Osula on for Woltemade.

82 mins: They don’t have a shot from that. Instead Christie chips it over the wall in search of a run that doesn’t happen, and Pope collects.

80 mins: Christie runs forwards, nudges the ball through the legs of Thiaw and runs into the Newcastle player. I’m not sure Thiaw could have done anything about it, but once the referee gives the free-kick Bournemouth wanted a second yellow card. They don’t get one. Still, they can have a shot from this.

80 mins: This hasn’t been a dull game exactly, it’s just been one without the slightest hint of goalmouth action.

79 mins: Bournemouth have a corner! Kluivert curls it in, Newcastle head it out.

77 mins: Another goal in the game I’m not watching! It’s Wilson Isidor who turns it in for 10-man Sunderland, now tied 1-1 with Aston Villa. Back in Bournemouth, Thiaw is booked for handball.

Updated

75 mins: Another change for the home side, as Amine Adli comes on for Marcus Tavernier.

74 mins: Diakite has been booked for a thing that happened a while ago.

73 mins: Burn pops up on the left flank and passes infield to Barnes, who runs into the penalty area and seems to be on the very verge of taking himself clear of the defence when Hill slides in and prods the ball out of play for a corner.

69 mins: There’s only been a goal! Not in this game, obviously, but it’s Sunderland 0-1 Aston Villa, because Matty Cash has slammed one into the onion bag from 25 glorious yards.

67 mins: Burn and Miley compete for the same high ball, which Burn sees as an opportunity to go down and spend a while rolling about. He never looks genuinely injured, but the referee stops the game and 30 seconds later Burn gets up and walks off.

Updated

63 mins: All sorts of substitutions. For Bournemouth Ryan Christie replaces Alex Scott and Justin Kluivert comes on for David Brooks, while for Newcastle Anthony Elanga and Harvey Barnes come on, with Willock and Murphy departing.

61 mins: Semenyo pumps the ball forwards, and with Pope running out to deal with it Brooks tries to outsprint Thiaw and steal it away from him. Thiaw gets in his way, pretty deliberately, Brooks goes down, and the referee doesn’t give anything.

57 mins: Semenyo sprints towards the penalty area again, but this time he goes down as Lewis Hall comes across him and again the referee doesn’t give anything.

55 mins: Semenyo needs a bit of treatment, and Woltemade and Diakite have a healthy exchange of opinions while the game is paused.

54 mins: Now Semenyo gets into the penalty area and now Livramento goes down easily. He doesn’t get one, but his prone form does get in the way of the ball, and Newcastle clear.

53 mins: Diakite did, to be fair, have a healthy tug of Woltemade’s left arm. Not enough for the VAR to overrule the referee’s on-field decision.

Updated

52 mins: Nearly a thing! Tonali on the right passes back to Livramento, who crosses to Woltemade. The ball forces him to turn away from goal, and then his first touch isn’t great, so he throws himself to the ground. Nobody is particularly impressed by this, least of all the referee.

50 mins: The main problem for Bournemouth is that Dan Burn, in particular, keeps getting in their way.

49 mins: A foul throw sees Bournemouth very literally handed possession. They don’t do anything with it. The game really needs someone, anyone really, to do something good in attack and remind everyone else involved that such a thing is possible.

48 mins: A period of Bournemouth possession ends with Woltemade getting in the way, and then winning a free kick.

46 mins: Peeep! And there’s news of a halftimely substitution! Alex Jimenez, winner of the game’s only yellow card so far, has gone off and James Hill has come on.

Updated

The players are back out and a second half is almost upon us.

The game between Sunderland and Aston Villa is as goalless as this one. Though that game has had 50% more shots on target (three) than this one (two).

Half time: Bournemouth 0-0 Newcastle

45+4 mins: And that is half of the time! This is Newcastle’s third away game this season and they are yet to feature a goal, and this one hasn’t really had a sniff of one.

45+3 mins: Newcastle briefly have the ball on the left, in a promising position. But they prioritise possession over chance creation and end up passing it all the way back into their defence. Still, this riles Bounemouth sufficiently for Jimenez to end up getting booked for a shirt tug.

45+1 mins: There’ll be four minutes of stoppage time, thanks to those few minutes of intense mid-half physio activity.

42 mins: A lovely turn from Woltemade under pressure allows him to find Murphy on the right, but his cross isn’t very good.

40 mins: In the day’s other 2pm Premier League kick-off things have now kicked off in a different sense, with Reinildo getting his marching orders. “Sunderland’s Reinildo just got mixed up in his role as a kicker of balls,” writes voluntary match correspondent Kari Tulinius. “Matty Cash pushed him over, and the Black Cat retaliated against the Villan in the unprofessional manner, leading to a prompt expulsion from the field of play, which seemed to come as a great surprise to him.”

Updated

39 mins: Good play from Woltemade, who runs down the right, looks up, and sadly does not have himself available as a crossing option, so he sends it straight to Petrovic instead.

37 mins: Those two players are also fine to play on. After a bright start the game has become a bit stodgy, even if it is still being played at high pace.

35 mins: Murphy is back up and on his feet, but now Evanilson and Livramento are down, after accidentally bumping into each other.

32 mins: Murphy is on the ground and has done a bit of clutching his right ankle. There didn’t seem to be much in Truffert’s challenge on him, but he’s been down long enough to suggest it’s not nothing.

Updated

29 mins: … from which Brooks crosses, it hits Tonali and bounces vaguely goalwards, and Botman boots clear. There’s a VAR check for handball against Tonali, but nothing doing.

28 mins: Brooks plays a one-two with Truffert on the left, notices Thiaw has stuck his leg out in search of the ball and goes over it. Free kick.

26 mins: Now, at the other end, the ball invitingly to Alex Scott on the edge of the area, but he volleys very emphatically high.

25 mins: The visitors’ longest and finest spell of possession sees Woltemade’s flick release Murphy, but he’s too wide for it to be worth shooting, so he turns back and a couple of passes later Tonali has a decent shooting chance from 20 yards, from which he fails to produce a dangerous shot.

24 mins: Willock runs down the left, but his pass infield is cleared. Still, it’s something.

21 mins: Everyone’s very busy indeed. It’s a bustly game. Bournemouth make inroads into Newcastle’s penalty area again, but the flag goes up again.

17 mins: Bournemouth win a corner, but float it too close to Pope.

15 mins: GOAL! But the lino has his flag up! It’s passed in to Evanilson, who squares across goal and Brooks turns it in! But it’s given offside, and VAR checks and agrees.

Updated

14 mins: Now Murphy shoots left-footed from 20 yards, but it’s not a great effort and flies well wide.

12 mins: From a Newcastle corner Petrovic comes flying off his line to punch as far as Tonali, who gets excited by the lack of goalkeeper in the Bournemouth goal and has a shot, which deflects to Woltemade, who was one of three offside players.

11 mins: Newcastle finally play some football, culminating in Murphy running onto Tonali’s pass into the penalty area and shooting from an acute angle into Petrovic.

10 mins: A super start from Bournemouth, full of intensity and pace, if not yet telling moments of quality in the final third.

9 mins: Save! An excellent run from Brooks ends with a backheel to I think Adams, whose first-time shot from the edge of the area is kicked away by Pope.

8 min: Bournemouth hog the ball for an age, but at the end of it all they toss it long towards Semenyo and it bounces beyond him and into Pope’s hands.

6 mins: It’s Newcastle’s fans making all the noise, and Bournemouth’s team making all the play.

Updated

4 mins: Nearly a chance! The ball is given to Scott, who has a fairly simple pass to release either of two runners about to burst untracked beyond the Newcastle defence but can’t find it.

1 min: First impressions: there is a woman sitting just behind Andoni Iraola as the TV camera looks at him wearing some very impressive cherry-flavoured knitwear.

1 min: Kick-off!

Right, players out and everything ready for kick-off.

“G’day SB,” writes Chris Paraskevas, who appears to be a concerned Australia-based Newcastle fan. “I’m intrigued by our lineup, which contains quite a few personnel changes,” he says. “I’m a little worried that the wholesale change (particularly in defence) might cause us more grief than good. My worries are also compounded by the fact that the family of magpies I’ve befriended in the backyard will be targeting me with a few spring swoops tomorrow morning. Things were going so well, I literally had them eating out of my hand until the family dog visited today and pissed them all off by trying to eat their snacks. The big bird (nickname: Big Al) gave me the 100-yard stare / hairdryer treatment before it flew off.”

British magpies can be a bit vindictive, but Australian magpies are next-level evil.

Sky have inevitably been largely talking about Arsenal and Manchester City in the build-up to this game, but their attention has finally shifted, with the players already in the Bournemouth tunnel.

Eddie Howe has a chat, after making seven changes to the team that started the Barcelona game:

We’ve looked at the players’ loads and tried to make the right decisions so we’ve got fresh energy. Bruno [Guimaraes] been an everpresent and he’s so important for us but he’s really done the miles. Barcelona was a big high. But such a quick turnaround here we thought for Bruno’s sake, we have to look after him. I think we’ve got real flexibility within the lineup and good players coming in. But of course we need to match Bournemouth’s intensity. It should make for a great game.

The teams!

The managers have made their selections, and then they have written those selections down on paper and given them to the referee and now there’s no changing them (unless the referee gives them special dispensation). So, here are the starting line-ups:

Bournemouth: Petrovic, Jimenez, Diakite, Senesi, Truffert, Adams, Scott, Semenyo, Tavernier, Brooks, Evanilson. Subs: Dennis, Soler, Christie, Doak, Kluivert, Adli, Junior Kroupi, Hill, Milosavljevic.
Newcastle: Pope, Thiaw, Botman, Burn, Livramento, Willock, Miley, Tonali, Hall, Jacob Murphy, Woltemade. Subs: Ramsdale, Trippier, Lascelles, Joelinton, Barnes, Krafth, Osula, Elanga, Guimaraes.
Referee: Robert Jones.

And while we’re here, there’s one other Premier League game with a 2pm kick-off and here are the starting lineups for that one:

Sunderland: Roefs, Hume, Mukiele, Alderete, Mandava, Rigg, Xhaka, Sadiki, Talbi, Isidor, Le Fee. Subs: Patterson, Neil, Ballard, Geertruida, Brobbey, Mayenda, Adingra, Traore, Masuaku.
Aston Villa: Martinez, Cash, Konsa, Mings, Digne, McGinn, Rogers, Kamara, Buendia, Guessand, Watkins. Subs: Bizot, Lindelof, Elliott, Torres, Malen, Sancho, Jimoh, Maatsen, Bogarde.
Referee: Sam Barrott.

Hello world!

Newcastle have played five games so far, including Thursday’s Champions League encounter with Barcelona: two goalless draws (there have only been five 0-0 draws in the Premier League so far this season, so they’re responsible for 40% of them), two defeats by a single goal and one win by a single goal. Bournemouth have also played five times, including their Carabao Cup defeat to Brentford: three wins by a single goal, one defeat by two goals (where they were drawing in the 89th minute), and that Carabao Cup game, which doesn’t really count because Andoni Iraola made eight changes, and it’s the Carabao Cup, but for the record they lost 2-0. In league games Newcastle’s opponents have 6.5 shots per 90 minutes and a combined xG so far of 2.1, in both cases the lowest in the Premier League, while Bournemouth’s figures are 9.0 and 3.5, in both cases the third lowest. All of which suggests we’ve got two well-organised teams who successfully restrict opponents’ chances without scoring particularly freely themselves, and as a result play closely-contested matches.

Bournemouth’s positive start – they would go second, at least for a while, if they win this – is particularly impressive given their summer outgoings. “For me it’s too early to say we’ve started very well,” Iraola said in his pre-match press conference. “We’re still in this process of getting used to new players. We’re doing it with good results, but it’s not a guarantee it will continue like this. The games we’ve won have been kind of tight games. The challenge is to compete against different opposition. We know how good Newcastle are, we know we have to be very good if we want to get anything from the game, but the performance of my players give me some confidence, because I’ve seen them doing the right things and I hope they can do it again.”

As for Eddie Howe’s pre-match thoughts, well, PA Media filed two stories from his press conference, one headlined “EDDIE HOWE TIPS ANTHONY ELANGA TO BE ‘VERY USEFUL’ FOR NEWCASTLE THIS SEASON” and the other “NEWCASTLE BOSS EDDIE HOWE VOWS TO REMAIN PATIENT WITH NICK WOLTEMADE”, neither of which suggests he had anything hugely thought-provoking to say. He’ll be hoping his team do the talking on the pitch, inevitably.

Anyway, and to summarise, this could be a thriller (sure, it could also end 0-0, but I’m an optimist). Welcome!
