Bournemouth 0-1 Manchester United, Liverpool 1-1 Aston Villa: clockwatch – as it happened

Thank you very much for joining me. There is still more football to enjoy.

The points were shared at Craven Cottage.

Late show.

Simon McMahon reports: “Dundee United found a loser instead of a winner. Of course they did. But can still move off the bottom if they beat Kilmarnock at Tannadice on Wednesday night …”

“Can we talk a little about time wasting, and the lack of actual minutes played in football games these days?” asks Samuel Dodson.

”We can leave aside the egregious inconsistencies in application of time wasting cautions (Raya Vs Alisson in the recent Bees/Liverpool game and Martinez today for instance); but overall, there is something a bit rough when the average fan has only seen the ball in play for 55 minutes per game if Newcastle are involved, and most fans pay for 90 yet get a little under 60. In all European competitions, Liverpool keep the ball in play the most of any English side: yet even they only keep the ball going and “active” for 63% of a game.

”Is it time we accepted that players can’t physically play for 90 minutes every week - and reduced the time for games to something closer than players effectively manage (I.E 60 mins). And introduce a stop clock system like rugby to prevent time wasting shenanigans and ensure greater consistency?”

It does seem to be becoming a far too prevalent issue in the modern game. Hopefully, a logical solution can be created.

A nice personal moment for Firmino in his final game at Anfield but a point does little for Liverpool. Andy Hunter reports.

One more point to go for Manchester United. Ed Aarons witnessed their win over Bournemouth.

Everton earned a big point very late on at Wolves. Ben Fisher was there.

GOAL! Carlisle 2-0 Bradford (Guy, 98) (agg: 2-1): A big moment for Carlisle.

We have extra time at Brunton Park!

If you want more live football, join Tim de Lisle for Nottingham Forest v Arsenal. Will the Premier League title race carry on for another day?

The result at Anfield means Manchester United need only a single point from their final two matches, at home to Chelsea and Fulham.

Full time! Liverpool 1-1 Aston Villa

Firmino keeps Liverpool’s Champions League hopes just about alive.

Liverpool 1-1 Aston Villa: Martinez comes to claim a cross but drops it. Villa survive the scare.

Full-time! Wolves 1-1 Everton

A big point for Everton, earned in dramatic circumstances.

Wolves 1-1 Everton: That could be a crucial moment in the battle to beat the drop. Everton will be nervously looking at what Forest do in 30 minutes and Leeds tomorrow.

GOAL! Wolves 1-1 Everton (Mina, 90+9)

The ball is in the back of the net! A deep cross goes into the box and Mina gets the final touch.

GOAL! Liverpool 1-1 Aston Villa (Firmino, 90)

The Brazilian, in his final match at Anfield, levels the score. Salah sends the ball into Firmino to smash the ball in.

Full time! Bournemouth 0-1 Manchester United

Casemiro’s goal is enough for victory. If Aston Villa hold on at Liverpool, then United will be in the Champions League next season.

Key event

Wolves 1-0 Everton: NINE minutes added on at Molineux, too!

Carlisle 1-0 Bradford (agg 1-1): NINE minutes added on!

Wolves 1-0 Everton: Maupay is on for Onana. The striker has scored once all season (I was there).

GOAL! Fulham 2-2 Crystal Palace (Ward, 83)

The defender pounces for his first goal in four years. Leno made the save from the original shot, the ball bounces off Robinson and Ward reacts first to score from close range.

Bournemouth 0-1 Manchester United: More changes for United as Fred and McTominay replace Antony and Eriksen.

Bournemouth 0-1 Manchester United: Moore goes through one-on-one with De Gea but it’s a poor finish from the Welsh striker.

Carlisle 1-0 Bradford (agg 1-1): Another 10 mins to go in a very tight game. Like in Stockport v Salford, there are some very tired players on the pitch.

Liverpool 0-1 Aston Villa: The hosts are on top but are yet to get the equaliser, despite their best efforts. Firmino and Milner are coming on for their final Liverpool appearances at Anfield.

Bournemouth 0-1 Manchester United: Weghorst slips Antony in but the Brazilian is far too eager to get the ball from his right to his left foot to shoot, allowing the defence to get back and stop him.

“I don’t share Sax’s seven-year itch view of Klopp,” says Peter Oh. “He’s doing just fine in my book. Perhaps eight is enough, a false nine would do, or maybe a perfect ten. Heck, crank the heavy metal football to eleven!”

Bournemouth 0-1 Manchester United: Garnacho is coming on for Sancho. How exciting.

Wolves 1-0 Everton: Toti sends the ball into Podence but he fails to control his volley properly. Wolves are completely dominant.

GOAL! Fulham 2-1 Crystal Palace (Mitrovic, 61)

Willian swings in a free-kick and Mitrovic heads home from eight yards out. What a season Mitrovic has had (apart from the eight-match ban).

Bournemouth 0-1 Manchester United: Weghorst for Martial. Will the Dutchman being Old Trafford next season? I doubt it.

“Please don’t ask how I know this,” says Ike Proud, “but I saw this morning that Man Utd’s third kit is available at a pretty steep discount these days. Is it possible they just forgot they had it, and are now desperately trying to shift it?”

I very cynical claim Ike and I am all for it. I won’t put the link to the sale in here but I can confirm they are retailing at less than 50% of RRP.

Bournemouth 0-1 Manchester United: The visitors are looking a touch poor in position at the moment. They need to refocus. Bournemouth have replaced Brooks with Moore.

Fulham 1-1 Crystal Palace: Reed pulls the ball back for Mitrovic but the striker sends his shot wide.

Second half

The games are back under way.

Simon McMahon updates us from north of the border: “1-1 at Livingston at half time, Will, and it’s Motherwell 0 Ross County 0, and Kilmarnock 0 St. Johnstone 1. If United can somehow find a winner, and the other scores remain unchanged, the bottom three teams will be level on points going into the final two games of the season. Pass the smelling salts, please.”

Ashen emails: “United didn’t really wear their third shirt, green ones, after the World Cup, ip until today that is.

“Does anybody know why? I just feel it’s kinda weird. Aren’t big clubs suckers for merchandise sales?”

Good old capitalism.

What a day it was at Edgeley Park!

Half time! Carlisle 1-0 Bradford (agg 1-1): Plenty to play for in the League Two play-off semi-final second leg.

Liverpool 0-1 Aston Villa: A VAR check after Mings’ very high challenge on Gakpo but they decide against handing out a red card.

Wolves 1-0 Everton: Calvert-Lewin is injured and looks set to come off. He was withdrawn last weekend at half time against City as a precaution and it looks like his season is done.

Simon Burnton was at Tottenham v Brentford. Here is his report …

Liverpool 0-1 Aston Villa: Luiz pings a ball to the back post, Ramsey collects and forces Alisson into a fine save.

Wolves 1-0 Everton: Sometimes football tactics are quite simple. Lopetegui has moved Adama Traore to the left to just run at Michael Keane. It might just work.

Wolves 1-0 Everton: After a fine start to the match, Everton are really struggling to compete with the hosts at the moment.

They sure would.

GOAL! Fulham 0-1 Crystal Palace (Edouard, 35)

Fine work by Eze in midfield, which results in him slip a pass through for Edouard and he whacks the ball in.

Liverpool 0-1 Aston Villa: Good stuff from the away end.

Wolves 0-0 Everton: Mina heads over from close range. Everton are playing well but the bad news is Michael Keane has come on for Nathan Patterson.

Jeff Sax emails: “Liverpool can sell and buy whoever they want, but... Klopp had his 7 years, he needs to move on.”

Who comes in, Jeff?

GOAL! Liverpool 0-1 Aston Villa (Ramsey, 27)

Our man in Bournemouth.

Kick off

The whistles are a-peeping!

Shaw starts for United in the end.

Stockport and Salford are really giving it everything but, my lord, do both teams look absolutely cream crackered.

A change in Manchester United’s starting XI incoming?

“What are your thoughts about the manager of the year short-list, should the two managers working today at the Vitality Stadium be on that list?” asks David Wall. “Gary O’Neil has worked a miracle, keeping Bournemouth up pretty comfortably despite the mess he inherited after their hammering at Liverpool and when most people assumed they were certainties for relegation.

“And after the shambles of last season (and more so after the first two games) few would have thought that United would be well placed to secure a Champions’ League spot, having already secured their first trophy in years, and with the possibility of winning another in a couple of weeks. It’s true that they’ve stuttered a bit since being eliminated from Europe (largely due to injuries, I think) but Ten Hag has done a fine job turning them around..

“Those on the list have certainly had good seasons but surely these two are among the best six performing managers of the year.”

My view on this is that those who have come into clubs have turned things around deserve a lot of credit, so O’Neil, Lopetegui and Emery should all be up there.

We are going to extra-time at Edgeley Park. It is a very warm day in Stockport, so plenty of those players will be very tired.

Full time: Tottenham 1-3 Brentford

It’s all done and dusted at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. After a fine first half, Spurs crumbled.

A great moment for David Brooks after treatment for Hodgkin lymphoma.

Jonathan Wilson on Manchester City.

GOAL! Spurs 1-3 Brentford (Wissa): The Bees have almost certainly sealed a cracking win.

So long, farewell, Bobby.

Simon McMahon, our unofficial Scottish clockwatch correspondent, emails: “Afternoon Will. After last week’s shocking performance that resulted in a dismal home defeat to Ross County, leaving them two points adrift at the foot of the table with just three games left, Dundee United manager Jim Goodwin has said that he expects ‘a reaction’ from his team today when they travel to face Livingston. Quite what that reaction will be is anyone’s guess. Maybe an even worse performance? To be fair, that will be difficult. Though given the way this season has gone, it could happen. But looking at the positives, I’m sure I’d feel much worse if I wasn’t so heavily sedated. In other news, Hearts currently lead Aberdeen in the battle for third place in the early kick off, and todays other games in the bottom six are Motherwell v Ross County and Kilmarnock v St. Johnstone.”

Doremus Schafer offers a logically suggestion for the Everton formation: “4-3-2-1 with Doucoure + Iwobi as central attacking midfielders?”

It seems very narrow.

Speaking of Everton … Dyche has some words of encouragement.

I am not very sure what formation Everton are playing today. It looks like McNeil is at left-back but then the makeup of the midfield is a tricky one to work out. Answers on a postcard.

Anfield will wave goodbye to Bobby Firmino today. The Brazilian is a cult hero at Liverpool, loved by all in the red half of the city. Get in the mood for all this hot Premier League action with 10 things to look out for.

Preamble

This could be the Premier League ends. If Arsenal lose, then the title is City’s. If Manchester United win and Liverpool lose, then the race for the top four is over, while wins for Nottingham Forest and Everton could essentially end the relegation battle.

But we must be optimists and hope that today’s fixtures will allow for a fantastic final day next Sunday. If we are only left to find out who finishes sixth and seventh, then it could be the dampest of squibs.

We must assume Liverpool will be beat Aston Villa, Manchester United will fall short at the Vitality. Forest and Everton have got it in them to lose these big games against Arsenal and Wolves, respectively. We most hope there is plenty still at stake next weekend or we might we might as well give up on football in its entirety.

And before we forget … Fulham are playing Crystal Palace. It doesn’t get more exciting than that!

Here’s to a fun afternoon ahead.
