Bournemouth 'consider legal advice' over Hawk-Eye error after Premier League relegation

Bournemouth are reportedly considering legal advice over the Hawk-Eye error which played a role in their relegation from the Premier League.

In the first game back after the coronavirus shutdown, Sheffield United were denied what looked a legitimate goal in their 0-0 draw at Aston Villa. Hawk-Eye failed for the first time since its introduction in 2013 when goalkeeper Orjan Nyland carried a Blades free-kick over his own goal-line.

Hawk-Eye later apologised after their seven cameras inside Villa Park were unable to clearly rule that the ball had crossed the line. Had the goal been awarded and other results played out identically, the Cherries would have stayed up on goal difference at Villa's expense.

The Telegraph claim Bournemouth could seek compensation, though there is no suggestion the sporting outcome could be reversed.

Sports lawyer Nick De Marco QC told The Telegraph: "Such a claim might be unprecedented but, depending on all the circumstances, it could be a good claim."

Asked about the blunder, Villa boss Dean Smith pointed to an incident earlier in the season which he believes wrongly denied Villa a point.

He said: “Go watch the 94th minute at Crystal Palace. Things happen.

“Referee Kevin Friend has blown a whistle when we have scored a goal.

"It should have been a penalty or a goal. We got neither.”
