Bourke Street pedestrian deaths to be investigated at inquest

The Victorian coroner has announced she will open an inquest next week into deaths of six people in the Bourke Street tragedy in Melbourne's CBD earlier this year.

The pedestrians were killed when they were run down by a car, which was driven up the busy footpath on January 20.

James "Dimitrious" Gargasoulas, 26, has been charged with six counts of murder and 29 counts of attempted murder.

Next week's hearing before Judge Sara Hinchey will hear submissions on the scope of the public inquest and what the next step in her investigation should be.

Her probe is running independently of the criminal investigation and will open before Gargasoulas's case is finalised.

It will examine whether new measures can be adopted to prevent a similar tragedy.

An after-hours bail justice released Gargasoulas just days before he allegedly went on the driving rampage through the city.

It prompted the Victorian Government to introduce legislation making it more difficult for people accused of serious crimes to be released on bail.

Police were also criticised for failing to intercept the car during a protracted pursuit in the lead up to the tragedy.

The hearing will be held on July 20.
