Bottles thrown at pensioner in night of chaos on 'quiet street'

People living in one part of Merseyside say they were left "terrified" by "industrial" fireworks going off and bottles being thrown this weekend.

One woman, who lives on Glenpark Drive in Southport, said "display style" fireworks were being set off on Sunday night.

Writing on Facebook, she said: "These were the type of fireworks you'd see at a public display.

"People were rude, an old man was shouted at, and glass bottles were thrown at cars.

"It was terrifying."

One man commented: "An elderly man had a bottle thrown at his car."

Another woman replied: "Absolute idiots!"

A video seen by the ECHO shows the sky above the area being lit up by huge fireworks as they exploded over the homes of families.

One woman said she had never seen anything like it in more than eleven years of living on the "quiet street".

Merseyside Police confirmed an investigation following a report of anti-social behaviour and alleged criminal damage in Southport on Sunday night.

A police spokesman said: "At around 10.45pm, we received a report of a civil dispute in Glenpark Drive involving loud fireworks.

"The fireworks were on a private property and ended a short time later. No offences were identified.

"Shortly after, a further call was received of bottles being thrown at a vehicle on Glenpark Drive following a verbal dispute, although no damage has been confirmed or offenders identified."

Community Policing Inspector Graham Fisher told the ECHO : “We take all reports of anti-social behaviour seriously, and if you have any more information about this or any incident come forward and we will take action.”
