Bottle attack thug left woman scarred for life after she rejected him at Hogmanay party

A former security guard who scarred a woman for life with a glass bottle at a New Year’s party after she rejected him has been jailed for 14 months.

Spurned Atif Attalmanan, 34, struck Leanne Wylie, 33, on the forehead outside a Glasgow city centre community hall.

The Somalian national called Miss Wylie a “f***ing bitch” before lashing out.

Attalmanan pleaded guilty at Glasgow Sheriff Court to the assault to Miss Wylie’s injury and permanent disfigurement.

Sheriff Martin Jones QC said: “You pled guilty to a very serious offence.

“I’m told the second blow broke the bottle and she suffered an injury that required five stitches. She has been left permanently disfigured and has a scar.

“This is so serious that a custodial sentence is necessary."

The court heard Miss Wylie and her sister went to the Common Village Community Hall near the city's Townhead at 5.30am on January 1.

Attalmanan wished Miss Wylie a happy new year but she asked to be left alone.

He kept tabs on Miss Wylie following her to a food queue and then watching her dance with her sister.

Attalmanan went on to sit beside Miss Wylie and was asked to leave again.

The women eventually left to get a taxi at around 6am.

Prosecutor Lauren Staunton said: “Miss Wylie felt a tap on her shoulder and turned round.

“Attalmanan was standing in front of her and he raised his right arm whilst holding a glass bottle and struck her on the forehead twice.

“He shouted ‘f***ing bitch’ as her head began to bleed on the second blow and the bottle smashed.”

Miss Wylie screamed as Attalmanan fled the scene into the city centre with the bottle.

The victim needed treatment for a head wound which still had glass inside.

Miss Staunton added: “It required five stitches and will leave a permanent scar.”

Attalmanan was traced by police three days later.

John McLaughlin, defending, told the court the former security guard had attended the party as he was lonely.

He added: “His explanation was he was extremely drunk at the time of the offence."
