Bothwell dad named as MSP's Local Hero

A Bothwell dad has been named as Uddingston and Bellshill’s Local Hero.

Joe Mulholland, a French polisher, has been selected for his long standing involvement in a number of community projects, most notably the "wonderfully uplifting" Bothwell Scarecrow Festival.

The dad of five and grandad of two - who has another grandchild on the way - has also been instrumental in helping build the Bothwell Futures team, as well as actively supporting the establishment of the Uddingston Music club and a new Men’s Shed.

He was chosen for the title by MSP Stephanie Callaghan.

The Uddingston and Bellshill MSP said: "As you would expect after a difficult 18 months for so many, I received a number of very worthy Local Hero nominations.

"Thank you everyone for taking the time to contact me with your terrific suggestions, everyone nominated is a standout community activist.

"Joe has been selected for his long standing and wide ranging list of community projects, most notably the wonderfully uplifting Bothwell Scarecrow Festival.

"Joe is part of the brilliant Bothwell Futures team setting out a 20 year vision for Bothwell, as well as actively supporting the establishment of the Uddingston Music club and a new Men’s Shed.

"Supported by his equally community minded family and friends, he has also developed an accessible nature walk. Never one to rest on past successes, Joe is always bursting with new plans and I am sure we will all continue to reap the benefits of future projects.

"So thank you Joe, a genuine Local Hero."

A stunned Joe told Lanarkshire Live : "It has taken me a few days to get my head around this. I never look for recognition, most things I do go under the radar. To be nominated is an absolute honour and I would like to thank whoever put my name forward.

"To be chosen to represent this area is a privilege that I don't accept lightly, as I know so many other worthy folk that work tirelessly for the good of others and the community.

"I will continue to work hard and I hope I can make you all proud. Thank you."

Joe, of Baillie Drive, will now join his MSP at the official opening of the new Scottish Parliament on October 2, representing the Uddingston and Bellshill constituency.
