Botham set to swing more trade UK's way

Cricket legend Ian Botham has been named as Britain's trade envoy to Australia.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson said Lord Botham would use his skills, experience and market knowledge to help UK businesses find new export and investment opportunities, and promote trade.

The trade envoys are parliamentarians appointed by the prime minister, drawn from both houses of parliament and across the political spectrum.

They are unpaid and voluntary.

During a visit to London in June, Scott Morrison reached an in-principle trade deal with Mr Johnson.

He described it as the most comprehensive and ambitious agreement Australia had concluded.

The text of the agreement has yet to be finalised and the parliaments of both countries will need to approve it before it operates.

It is understood the final text could be approved in November.
