Both yokozuna kept their records perfect, while two ozeki stayed hot on their heels on the third day of action at the Nagoya Grand Sumo Tournament on Tuesday.
Yokozuna Kakuryu (3-0) surprised Asanoyama, the winner of the previous summer tournament, with a sidestep move in their first career matchup to hand the No. 1 maegashira his second loss.
Fellow yokozuna Hakuho exchanged shoves and slaps with top-ranked maegashira Hokutofuji after the jump-off. The yokozuna, though, eventually latched onto his opponent's mawashi with both hands and sent the winless maegashira down with a twisting arm throw.
Two of the three ozeki remained one loss behind the unbeaten yokozuna, starting with ozeki Takayasu, who had a replay for the second consecutive day.
Ringside judges ruled Takayasu's first bout with No. 2 maegashira Endo was indecisive and ordered a replay. The second time around, the ozeki easily sent Endo to the surface of the dohyo to earn his second victory.
Ozeki Goeido also picked up his second win by quickly pushing out No. 2 maegashira Aoiyama (2-1).
Ozeki Tochinoshin, however, remained winless, falling to komusubi Ryuden, who has knocked off ozeki Takayasu on the previous day. Against Tochinoshin, the komusubi used an outside grip to throw down the Georgian and collect his second victory.
Meanwhile, No. 5 maegashira Kotoshogiku also remained undefeated by pushing out No. 3 maegashira Daieisho (1-2).
Sekiwake Mitakeumi earned his second win against fellow sekiwake Tamawashi. Mitakeumi kept his composure and steadily pushed winless Tamawashi out of the ring.
Komusubi Abi avoided three straight losses with a strong performance to push out No. 3 maegashira Shodai, who suffered his first defeat.
