The Boston Celtics are self-quarantining in Milwaukee after concerns they may have been exposed to the coronavirus behind an ongoing global pandemic after playing the Utah Jazz last week.
Boston was one of five teams asked to limit their exposure to others after playing the Jazz on Mar. 6, with concern Celtics players might themselves have contracted the virus after Jazz center Rudy Gobert tested positive for the coronavirus.
The Cleveland Cavaliers, Detroit Pistons, New York Knicks and Toronto Raptors have also played Utah recently, and should self-quarantine, according to ESPN.
Today, the team is reportedly headed back to Boston according to Sports Illustrated’s Chris Mannix.
Earlier, forward Gordon Hayward related his surprise at the speed at which things progressed to lead to the suspension of games.
“I think the whole thing is pretty insane how it unraveled so fast,” Hayward related (via the Boston Herald’s Steve Bulpett). “Like, we were just at dinner talking about how we were going to play the Bucks and everything, and then all of a sudden it’s like, boom, the season’s suspended.”
“I’m kind of worried about Robyn [Hayward’s wife] and her being pregnant … should I go home? I want to make sure I’m not infected or anything,” he added.
The uncertainty and surprise surrounding the pandemic is affecting everyone, and the Celtics are by no means excluded. It seems the plan is to move forward with a high degree of caution, which seems appropriate given the circumstances.
