Boss whose firm is at centre of listeria deaths probe calls for ban on pre-packed sandwiches

The owner of the meat firm at the centre of the hospital listeria deaths probe says vulnerable patients should not be given prepacked sandwiches.

Five patients have died from the bug in this outbreak.

They are thought to have eaten chicken salad sandwiches provided by the Good Food Chain, which used meat from North Country Cooked Meats.

Both firms have ceased production. Jeff Thomas, the meat firm boss, has vowed to stop supplying anyone making hospital sarnies.

Mr Thomas, 44, said: “This is an outrage and those people should never have been given prepacked sandwiches…

"Government advice is listeria can be serious for [the] vulnerable, so why are prepacked sandwiches served in hospital?”

A listeria strain was found at his factory in Salford. However it is not yet know if it is behind the outbreak.

Health officials said yesterday the two latest deaths were at the University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust, and University Hospitals of Derby and Burton NHS trust.

Two died in Manchester and one in Liverpool.

Health Secretary Matt Hancock promised “severe consequences if there is any evidence of wrongdoing”.

There were non-fatal listeria cases at Western Sussex Hospitals NHS trust, Frimley Health NHS trust, and East Kent Hospitals
