Boss of pallet firm damaged by fire left 'absolutely devastated'

A fire that spread through a pallet firm has left the company's boss 'absolutely devastated'.

East Midlands company Scott Timber Ltd owns Scotts Pallets, which was nearly destroyed by a blaze at its site in Church Gresley, Derbyshire.

Pallets were destroyed and smoke could be seen miles away as 16 crews fought the blaze which started around 8.50pm on Sunday May 26.

Alan Gibson, managing director of Scott Timber Ltd hopes to save jobs by temporarily relocating staff to other Midlands sites.

Mr Gibson told DerbyshireLive: "The site was empty at the time and local management and the fire service were on the scene at about 9.30pm.

"I think it was local residents who called the emergency services.

"The fire service and management stayed on the site until the fire was out.

"I am absolutely devastated. The site has been operating for a number of years.

"Ongoing businesses will not be affected and we are in communication with our employees with the opportunity for them to relocate to our other sites in the Midlands while we repair this site.

"We are now going to repair the site so we are talking to our insurance company who are coming out and we remain active.

"Our stock and yard surface was destroyed but our building is intact. The fire service saved it.

"The fire service did a fantastic job.

"We want to say sorry to local residents. Their homes were not too far away and with all the smoke and dust there will have been."

Derbyshire Police has confirmed it is still speaking to witnesses and gathering evidence but was not yet able to confirm whether the fire was started deliberately.

Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service confirmed no cause had yet been found and is still under investigation.
