Boss of company at centre of a clinical waste scandal faces court rap over pensions

The boss of a company at the centre of a has been charged with breaching pension regulations in the wake of its collapse.

It’s alleged that Garry Pettigrew, 52, and his wife, Alison, 50, failed to provide documents and information to the Pensions Regulator.

Charges state that the couple, as directors of Healthcare Environmental Scotland Limited, failed to comply with the requirements of the 2004 Pensions Act.

Garry Pettigrew was managing director of the firm which went into liquidation in April after losing a series of National Health Service contracts in Scotland and England.

The company was the subject of a criminal inquiry south of the border over allegations that excess medical waste was being stored at five sites.

About 150 people worked at its plant in Shotts, Lanarkshire, where waste from every hospital in Scotland was stored, processed and incinerated.

They lost their jobs when the plant closed in December, with the company claiming it had suffered cash flow problems following the loss of contracts in England.

At Hamilton Sheriff Court yesterday, the couple, of Shotts, Lanarkshire, were accused of failing to co-operate with the Pensions Regulator by not providing documents and information as requested between March 29 and September 24 this year.

They did not appear in court and the case was continued without plea until October 29.
