Boss of Cardiff's WOW Bar fined over 'loud music and singing' in early hours of the morning

The boss of a Cardiff bar has been fined £2,000 after the council received repeated complaints about "loud music and singing" late at night and in the early hours of the morning.

WOW Bar licensee Victoria Roffi, 57, failed to attend Cardiff Magistrates' Court where she was charged with two counts of breaching a noise abatement notice served on the venue.

A Cardiff council spokesman said "a significant number of complaints were made about loud amplified music and singing late at night at the venue and into the early hours of the morning".

She was fined a total of £2,000 after the charges, relating to October 21 and November 4 last year, were found proven in her absence.

Following the case a council spokesman said there had been "numerous complaints" about WOW Bar dating back to July last year.

Officers from the Shared Regulatory Service visited the venue a number of times to try to resolve the problem but the complaints continued so legal action was taken.

Councillor Michael Michael said: "The council has a statutory duty to investigate noise complaints and we ask all licensed premises to work with the council when complaints are received.

"In many cases we agree with the venue on the level of amplified music which is acceptable late at night and, in some cases, we have actually insisted that the venue fits a noise limiter to the PA system.

"In this case if we continue to receive complaints then we will have to investigate them further. We will take further legal action if it is required."

Roffi, of Greenfield Terrace, Abercynon, was fined a total of £2,000 and ordered to pay costs of £850. She must also pay a victim surcharge of £100.
