Boss' message on Nottingham Forest loanee as winger shines in brilliant win

Chris Hughton hailed Sammy Ameobi’s inspired performance as Nottingham Forest stretched their unbeaten run to seven games in all competitions with victory over Millwall.

The winger scored two thumping efforts in a 3-1 win as the Reds coasted to victory against Gary Rowett’s side, who have won just once in their last 15 Championship games.

Ameobi opened the scoring with a fierce strike in the first half, but produced an even better finish after the break, when he curled a wonderful 25-yard effort past Bartosz Bialkowski.

And Hughton, who saw Ryan Yates add a third in the convincing victory, was full of praise for the winger’s all-round contribution.

Player ratings

Nottingham Forest secured a third successive win and made it seven games unbeaten as they cruised past a dreadful Millwall side, 3-1 at the City Ground.

Sammy Ameobi opened the scoring in the first half when his powerful drive flew past Bartosz Bialkowsk, and he then made it two with a peach of a strike from 20 yards.

Ryan Yates added a third from a corner with a goal his industrious performance deserved. Ben Thompson did hit a consolation for Millwall, whose problems continue to mount.

Leigh Curtis was at the City Ground and here are his ratings.

Warnock takes aim

Middlesbrough boss Neil Warnock might have something to say about Nottingham Forest’s tendency for a pre-match huddle, when the teams meet next Wednesday.

Football has been in the spotlight in recent days, amid a third national lockdown due to the coronavirus pandemic.

With a number of clubs suffering from Covid-19 outbreaks and games being postponed, there has been debate about whether the sport should be suspended - and whether players should refrain from mass celebrations when they score.

After his team lost 1-0 to Birmingham City, Warnock had a pop at the opposition for gathering together before kick-off. That is something the Reds generally do, as was the case ahead of their 3-1 victory over Millwall.

Going nowhere

Sheffield United manager Chris Wilder has made it clear has no plans to recall midfielder Luke Freeman from Nottingham Forest.

The Blades are beset with injury problems at present and will be without seven players for Sunday’s Premier League clash against Tottenham.

They’ve been particularly hard hit in the middle and didn’t have a single midfielder on the bench for the midweek victory over Newcastle United – the Blades’ first win of the season.

Despite those issues, Wilder wants Freeman to stay at the City Ground for the rest of the season.

On the move

Young Nottingham Forest goalkeeper Jordan Wright has completed a loan move to Alloa Athletic.

The 21-year-old will spend the rest of the season with the Scottish Championship side in a bid to secure some game time.

Wright has previously had loan spells at Alfreton Town, Nuneaton Borough and Kettering Town.

He joined the Nigel Doughty Academy in the summer of 2015 and has been a regular for the Reds at youth level, in the Under-18s and Under-23s.
