Bosnia-Herzegovina vs Northern Ireland: VAR technology to be used in playoff

Northern Ireland's Euro playoff semi-final against Bosnia-Herzegovina will have VAR technology in operation.

The Video Assistant Referee will be used for the clash in Sarajevo this Thursday night (7.45pm kick-off BST).

It will be the first time VAR has been used in a match involving Northern Ireland or Bosnia.

The system is used by many major leagues throughout the world but continues to divide opinion among fans.

Northern Ireland supporters have been joking that it is three years too late after a controversial penalty award saw them lose out in a World Cup playoff against Switzerland in November, 2017.

Ricardo Rodriguez scored from the spot at Windsor Park after Corry Evans was adjudged to have handled inside the area.

Replays showed the ball hit Evans' shoulder, with that goal proving the difference as Switzerland earned a 1-0 aggregate win over two legs.
