Borussia Dortmund have announced the departure of head coach Lucien Favre.

The former Borussia Monchengladbach and Nice boss spent a little over two-and-a-half years in charge at the Westfalenstadion, but their form this year has been erratic and he leaves after a run of one win in five across all competitions and the same return from their last five in the Bundesliga.

Favre’s final game in charge was a 5-1 home defeat to Stuttgart on Saturday and the 63-year-old was confirmed as having left on Sunday.

“Borussia Dortmund have parted ways with head coach Lucien Favre,” said a short statement. “The club would like to thank Lucien for his dedication and wish him success in his future.”

CEO Hans-Joachim Watzke added:

"We are all grateful for Lucien Favre and his excellent work over the past two and a half years, where he and his team finished as runner-up twice. Beyond any doubt, Lucien Favre is a great professional and person."

Dortmund confirmed that assistant coach Edin Terzic would remain as interim boss until the conclusion of the 2020/21 season, with Otto Addo and Sebastian Geppert also on the staff.

They are only five points off league leaders Bayern Munich and RB Leipzig, but have lost four times this season.

They will be in the Champions League last-16 draw next week after topping Group F ahead of Lazio, Club Brugge and Zenit.

Jadon Sancho has been continually linked with a move away and has not been in his best form this season, while star striker Erling Haaland is out injured.
