Borussia Dortmund chief directs pointed Erling Haaland transfer message at Man Utd

Borussia Dortmund has used Manchester United's failed pursuit of Jadon Sancho last summer as a warning to clubs' targeting Erling Haaland this summer.

A host of clubs have been linked with the Norwegian superstar in the upcoming transfer window including Real Madrid, Barcelona, Manchester City, as well as United.

The striker has a £70m release clause in his contract that will be activated in the summer of 2022, but teams are keen to prise him away from Germany a year earlier than that.

Dortmund are adamant that Haaland is staying put for another year and that the forward is in agreement with their stance.

Now BVB CEO Hans-Joachim Watzke has used United's near-miss with Sancho last summer as an example of why they won't be forced to sell their prized asset.

Dortmund set a deadline for United to sign the England international almost 12 months ago as they placed a £108million price tag on the winger.

And, although they've not set an asking price for Haaland, Watzke insists they will have the same approach once again - and it's entirely down to his suitors to come up with the goods.

When asked how many clubs can afford Haaland, Watzke told SportBild : "Your assumption is fundamentally wrong: Because there are no conditions from us.

“I have the clear expectation Erling Haaland will still play for us next season. And I don’t worry about anything else.

“I suspect they [Real Madrid and Barcelona] also know about the contractual situation and our attitude. I’m really completely relaxed here.

"With Jadon Sancho, nobody believed us until deadline day last summer that he would stay – and he is still here today.”
