Borussia Dortmund chief aims dig at Arsenal star Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang

Borussia Dortmund CEO Hans-Joachim Watzke has aimed a dig at Arsenal striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, suggesting that money was the main reason that he decided to leave the Bundesliga club to join the Gunners.

Aubameyang scored 141 goals in 213 appearances for the German club before completing a £56 million transfer to the Emirates Stadium in January 2018. He has since gone onto score 49 goals in 73 appearances in Red and White, including the equaliser in the 1-1 draw against Manchester United on Monday evening.

Arsenal and Aubameyang will be back in action on Thursday night when Unai Emery's men take on Standard Liege in their second Europa League game of the season, while Dortmund are in Champions League action against Slavia Praha tonight (Wednesday).

And the German club's chief has used the two fixtures to take aim at the striker.

“Of course it is hard to keep a player in the face of such sums,” he told Suddeutsche Zeitung.

“Some go to clubs because of this money, where they have not played Champions League for years.

“Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, who plays great at Arsenal, will probably be warm-hearted when he looks at his bank account, but on Wednesdays, will be saddened when he has to watch the Champions League on television.”

Arsenal missed out on Champions League football last season after a fifth place Premier League finish and losing out to Chelsea in the Europa League final.
