Borussia Dortmund chief admits 'big transfer' exit on the horizon amid Jadon Sancho interest

Borussia Dortmund chief Hans-Joachim Watzke admits the club could be forced to sell one of their prized assets in the near future.

Dortmund received multiple offers from Manchester United for England winger Jadon Sancho in the summer.

The Bundesliga giants rebuffed all of United's approaches for the 20-year-old, insisting the Premier League big boys would have to meet their £108million valuation of the player if they wanted to acquire his services.

Dortmund's asking price for Sancho, however, could soon change given the financial impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, which has seen football clubs across the globe take astronomical revenue hits.

Watzke is all too aware of that fact and admits the pandemic could force the club to cash in on one of their most valuable players.

During an interview with SportBild , Dortmund's CEO said: “We could have made a big, valuable transfer in the summer.

"That’s well known. But we’re glad it didn’t come to this.

"Of course, we will also implement transfers again in the future, because corona is clearly throwing us back.

"Even the biggest clubs are feeling the effects of the pandemic, be it Bayern, Barcelona or Real Madrid.”

“At some point you come to the limit of what you can answer for. You can even see that in Munich right now with David Alaba as an example.”

Despite failing in their bid to sign Sancho, United still hold an interest in landing the Manchester City academy graduate.

Watzke's comments will be welcome news to Red Devils executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward, who tabled multiple offers below Dortmund's valuation on the forward.

Sancho and his Dortmund team-mates will be back in action this evening, travelling to Belgium to take on Club Brugge in their third Champions League Group F match.

United, meanwhile, will also take to the pitch tonight, locking horns with Turkish giants Istanbul Basaksehir in their third Group H match.
