Borna Barisic 'staying' at Rangers as Roma transfer links are rubbished by family member

Borna Barisic is set to stay at Rangers, according to reports in his homeland.

The left back appeared to say an emotional goodbye to fans as he left the pitch in tears following Sunday’s 1-0 Scottish Premiership victory over Celtic.

That led to speculation that he’d made his last appearance for the Glasgow club.

Assistant boss Gary McAllister did little to dispel that notion afterwards, replying with “you never know” when asked if it was Barisic ’s last game for Rangers.

But now it’s reported that the 28-year-old is staying put after Croatian outlet Sportske Novost i claimed a source close to the player confirmed he won’t be leaving.

The unnamed family member has apparently said there has been no discussions with Roma and that Barisic jetted off on international duty after the weekend’s game fully committed to the Gers.

After returning from injury in time for Euro 2020, Barisic didn’t rejoin the Rangers squad until later in the summer and struggled to recapture his best form during the opening weeks of the season.

But McAllister felt he was back to his best on Sunday, saying: "What I would say, that just might be a wee reminder to himself that that’s his level.

"That was Borna Barisic back at his very best. And it’s good to see."
