Borna Barisic Rangers contract talks begin with Ibrox star ready to find 'best solution'

Borna Barisic is in talks with Rangers over a new contract.

The Light Blues star is heading into the final year of his contract having been first choice in the left-back role since joining from Osijek under Steven Gerrard back in 2018. Michael Beale has used the Croatia international regularly although Ridvan Yilmaz was afforded the chance to stake his claim in a run of games towards the end of the season.

The Ibrox men are currently going through a summer overhaul with three new additions in the door to date in the shape of Kieran Dowell, Dujon Sterling and Jack Butland, who have all put pen to paper on pre-contract agreements and will officially hook up with their new team-mates on July 1.

A number of fringe men are expected to head the other way while five players have already departed following the expiry of contracts. Alfredo Morelos, Ryan Kent, Filip Helander, Scott Arfield and Allan McGregor all waved goodbye to Ibrox in the final home game.

However, it seems Barisic is one they are keen to keep around as he revealed negotiations are underway as they look to strike an agreement. The 30-year-old will face major competition for the starting role next term from Yilmaz who impressed after his return to full fitness following a difficult first year in Glasgow.

Barisic said: "I have a contract with Rangers for one more year. I have started negotiations with the club.

"I don't want to say anything because you never know in football.

"However, I have a great relationship with everyone at the club and we will find the best solution. There's always speculation about my future. it reaches me - but little of it is true.

"I missed three games at the end of the season, I had a quadriceps injury, it wasn't terrible, but we didn't want to risk it. The last time I played it was for, about 25 minutes."
