Borna Barisic Rangers asking price claim as Italian media give update on Roma pursuit

Roma may be priced out of a move for Borna Barisic as a report in Italy claims Rangers have set the asking price higher than the Italian club are willing to go.

Manager Steven Gerrard has confirmed that the Serie A giants are keen to sign the left-back, and they're likely to need someone in that position soon.

Following an injury to Nicolo Zaniolo, the Giallorossi are looking to bring in Matteo Politano from Inter, in a swap deal with Leonardo Spinazzola.

That would leave Aleksandar Kolarov as the only natural left-back in the squad, and even stand-ins Davide Santon and Davide Zappacosta, both natural right-backs, are injured.

However Roma news website LaRoma24 is reporting that a deal for Barisic is unlikely this month.

They state that Rangers are looking for a fee in excess of €10m (£8.6m) which Roma sporting director Gianluca Petrachi considers to be too expensive.

The website states that Barisic represents the kind of profile of player Roma are looking for, but they won't pay that kind of price.

Newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport previously reported that the Italian club wanted to take Barisic on an initial loan with an option to buy in the summer, but the likelihood of Rangers allowing their first choice left-back to leave in the middle of the season without a guaranteed future fee is nonexistent.

With Celtic only two points clear at the top of the league, and with the Gers retaining a game in hand, such a deal would likely cause outrage from fans.
