Borna Barisic bins Rangers targets as star pinpoints key to Croatian success stories

Borna Barisic has admitted he no longer gives himself goal and assist targets at Rangers due to the pressure they bring to perfrom.

The Croatian international full-back has scored four and created 13 during 39 games in a productive third season in Govan but readily admits he's not set any advance goals for productivity this year for the first time - preferring to aim for simply his very best.

And while he's known for his swashbuckling forward play, don't think he's not keeping an eye on the defensive numbers.

Barisic sees himself as a defender first and foremost and feels the attacking elements of his play are an added bonus rather than the be all and end all.

On setting targets, he told Rangers TV: "I have done that twice in my career here at Rangers and sometimes it comes with pressure.

"So my target is to get as many goals and assists as I can.

"But first of all I'm a defender so I'm also happy because of clean sheets. Those mean a lot to a defender.

"That's the first thing I need to do on the pitch, to defend well, then everything I do going forward is a big plus for me.

"This team and the way we play allows me to go forward. The gaffer likes full-backs that attack.

"I like that too because I can use my crossing to get as many assists or even goals that I can.

"It's very important to me."

Alongside great Croat players of the past in Dado Prso and Nikica Jelavic, Barisic has become a fans favourite at the Ibrox club.

And he puts the success of Croats in Scotland down to a shared passion between the people of the two nations.

He said: "Croatia is the same as Scotland in that we love our country, love our clubs.

"We want to give everything for our country and clubs, especially when we play so I think there is some passion in that football and that's the connection between the Croatian players that came here and the Scottish people.

"We share the same passion."

Barisic is known for his deadly free-kicks but he doesn't get it all his own way with several other talents competing for dead ball chances.

Ianis Hagi and James Tavernier in particular have shown their adeptness during their time in Govan and while there is rivalry, Barisic is delighted he has colleagues who can add to the team's arsenal.

He said: "We work three or four times per week on our free-kicks. Especially the day before the match then we try to stay and practice.

"James has scored some good goals, I've scored and Ianis (Hagi) also has a fantastic free-kick.

"We practice and will practice in the future.

"It's very good when you have someone who can score from different types of goals like free-kicks so I'm happy I can help the team that way."
