Boris will come to the North of England as part of celebrations for 'Brexit Day' on January 31

Boris Johnson is to celebrate Brexit Day on January 31 with a visit to the North of England.

He will hold a meeting of his Cabinet in the North, to discuss the Government's plans to "level up" the country and boost the poorer parts of the North and Midlands.

It is not yet known exactly where the meeting will be held yet.

The aim is to focus on what the UK can achieve in the decade after Brexit - rather than focusing on the divisive and sometimes angry debate over EU membership that has gripped the UK in recent years.

Downing Street has now published details of how Brexit will be celebrated, and there is no mention of Big Ben ringing out when the UK officially leaves at 11pm. That's despite Mr Johnson previously suggesting that members of the public could pay to ensure the famous bongs are heard.

At the moment, Parliament's famous clock tower is out of commission for repairs, and it would cost an estimated £500,000 to ring the bell just for Brexit.

Instead, the day will involve a "special Cabinet" where Ministers will discuss how the Government plans to "spread prosperity and opportunity" across the UK, according to Number 10.

In the evening, the Prime Minister will be back in Downing Street and will deliver a televised speech to the nation.

As 11pm draws close, there will be a light display in Downing Street, including a clock counting down to 11pm projected on to the outside of the street's buildings.

Buildings around Whitehall will also be lit up.  And the Union Jack will be flown on all of the flag poles in Parliament Square, next to the House of Commons.

A commemorative Brexit 50p coin will also come into circulation on the day we leave the EU, with the words "Peace, prosperity and friendship with all nations" incorporated into the design.

Boris Johnson is expected to be one of the first to receive the new coin on the day.
