Boris says he will wait for result of inquiry before deciding what to do next

The Prime Minister has said he will wait for the results of an inquiry before deciding whether to resign.

Mr Johnson has repeatedly denied wrongdoing and has apologised for mistakes made as parries have been held in and around Downing Street during lockdown.

A formal investigation into all the gatherings is now under way.

Asked if he could survive the row over the alleged parties, Boris Johnson said: “I understand people’s feelings and I understand why people feel as strongly as they do about this issue.

“I repeat my apologies for what happened. I’m heartily, heartily sorry for misjudgments that were made in No 10.

“What I do need to do is wait for the conclusion of the inquiry but, before then, to keep going with what we’re doing.”

That meant a Government that is “focused nonetheless on taking the country forward in the way that we are” – coming out of Covid “faster than any other comparator country”.

“A country that has a higher level of vaccination than any other comparable country, a country that has the most open society and economy currently.

“Now, that has been delivered by this Government but we need to get on and do much, much more: we need to help people with the cost of living, we need to tackle issues at our borders, we need to fix the Covid backlogs, we need to rebuild the economy.

“We have a huge agenda of work and that is what this Government is going to get on and deliver.”
