Boris Johnson 'won't hesitate' to tighten coronavirus rules - but pubs stay open

Downing Street today has raised fears for a future return to stricter lockdown rules - as coronavirus cases across the UK rise.

A spokesman for Boris Johnson refused to rule out that the number of people who could be allowed to gather indoors could be slashed and stressed that the regulations remain "under review".

But they confirmed that there was currently no plans to close pubs or stop the return of students to universities.

And pressed on what the government was planning in light of the spike in cases, the Prime Minister's official spokesman said the PM "won't hesitate' to tighten coronavirus rules if needed.

Reports today claim that minister will reduce the legal limit on more than than 30 people gathering in one place.

Current guidance says people in England must not meet more than one other household indoors - either in a private home, or in a restaurant or pub.

But that's not a legal cap.

The law only bans meetings of more than 30 people, indoors or outdoors.

According to Sky News and ITV's political editors, that legal cap of 30 people will now be reduced.

But asked directly about the rule change Downing Street refused to rule out the change.

Instead Boris Johnson's official spokesman said: "We take the rise in cases extremely seriously, and we do keep our coronavirus regulations under review."

He added that in the event of a serious rise in cases that the government "won't hesitate to act".
