Boris Johnson is playing games and watching classic films as he continues his coronavirus recovery in hospital, Downing Street has said.

The Prime Minister’s choices of entertainment are said to include the 1987 comedy Withnail and I and Lord of the Rings.

He has also reportedly been playing sudoku.

Mr Johnson's fiancee Carrie Symonds, who is expecting their first child in weeks, also sent him letters and baby scans in hospital, a Downing Street source told the PA news agency.

Number 10 announced on Friday that he had been able to take “short walks, between periods of rest” at St Thomas’ Hospital.

Mr Johnson was moved to a general ward earlier this week after spending three days in intensive care.

Aides and Cabinet colleagues had feared for his health on Sunday, prompting him to enter hospital that night and be transferred to ICU the following day for limited oxygen treatment.

He was later said to be in "good spirits" and and “waving his thanks to all the nurses and doctors” as he was transferred wards.

His father Stanley Johnson said his son “almost took one for the team” but will now “take time” to recover, suggesting he may soon relocate to Chequers, the British Prime Minister’s country retreat in Buckinghamshire.
