Boris Johnson 'watches Love Actually for first time in coronavirus recovery film binge'

Boris Johnson has been catching up with his favourite films as he recovers from coronavirus, according to reports.

The Prime Minister, 55, is said to have watched Love Actually for the first time while recuperating from his illness, after he left intensive care on Thursday.

A No 10 spokesman confirmed yesterday that Mr Johnson is now back on a ward at St Thomas' Hospital in London and "in very good spirits".

He is said to be in the "early stage" of recovery and able to take short walks, although he remains under the close supervision of medics.

The Sun reports that the Prime Minister has been using his time off to re-watch his favourite films, which include Withnail and I and JRR Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings trilogy.

His staff have uploaded a choice of several classics to an iPad, including Groundhog Day and Home Alone, which he has also never seen before.

A No 10 source said on Friday: “It’s a good time to fill in some of his cultural gaps.

“It might seem odd but he has never seen Home Alone. He prefers Greek poetry, doesn’t he?”

Mr Johnson, who was admitted to hospital last Sunday, has also been keeping himself occupied by doing Sudoku puzzles.

He has expressed his deep gratitude to staff at St. Thomas', who he believes likely saved his life.

A No 10 spokesperson added: “He has spoken to his doctors and thanks the whole clinical team for the incredible care he has received.

“His thoughts are with those affected by this terrible disease.”

After three days in intensive care, Mr Johnson was moved out onto a ward last night shortly before the 8pm 'Clap for Carers'.

The Sun reported he phoned his pregnant fiancee Carrie Symonds as soon as doctors handed him back his phones.

Mr Johnson's father Stanley today said his son almost "took one for the team" and his illness should highlight how anyone can be laid low by Covid-19.

It remains unclear when he will be able to return to action.

Downing Street has not commented on when the PM might be discharged from hospital, saying it will be a decision for his doctors.

Mr Johnson Senior has suggested the PM - who experts say could taken weeks to recover full health - should recuperate at his grace-and-favour country retreat Chequers.

It comes as the number of daily deaths from coronavirus in the UK passed the peaks in Spain and Italy for the first time.

Some 8,958 people died in the UK after testing positive for Covid-19 as of 5pm yesterday - a rise of 980 on the day before.

The daily rise of 980 outstrips the UK's previous biggest jump of 938.

And for the first time it means the UK has recorded more new deaths in one day than Italy and Spain did at their peak.

Italy recorded 971 new deaths on March 28 while Spain recorded 950 on April 3, according to the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control.
