Boris Johnson warns of second lockdown after thousands flock to the coast

Prime Minister Boris Johnson insists he won't think twice about tightening lockdown after Britain's beaches were swamped on the hottest day of the year.

A "major incident" was declared in the south of England after beaches - including Bournemouth - were inundated, prompting England's Chief Medical Officer Chris Whitty to issue fresh warnings.

On Tyneside, beaches near the coast were also packed.

ChronicleLive understands police dealt with several incidents and beaches were left strewn with rubbish after a day of fun in the sun spiralled out of control.

Now BirminghamLive reports that Health Secretary Matt Hancock has warned beaches will be closed off if thousands continue to flock to beaches.

However it has since been reported that Government ministers are not keen on the idea.

A No 10 spokesperson issued a warning to the thousands of sunseekers amid fears of a second spike of coronavirus cases.

Boris Johnson's official spokesman said: “It's not for me to pass comment on particular photographs.

"What I would say is that the PM and the government's scientific and medical advisers have stressed the great importance of the public continuing to adhere to social distancing advice.

"It's only because of the public's hard work that we've been able to bring the virus under control.

“If the rules don’t continue to be followed and the virus starts to spread exponentially again, then we will look at having to reverse some of the easements that we’ve put into place.

"And I don't think anyone in the British public would want for that to happen."

The Met Office declared yesterday the hottest day of the year so far with 33C temperatures registered at London Heathrow Airport.

In Dorset, emergency services were "completely overstretched", with illegal parking leading to a record number of tickets from enforcement officials.

Police were deployed by the local authority as patrols were increased, with pictures showing swathes of litter left behind on the sand.

The scenes were criticised by Good Morning Britain doctor Dr Hilary Jones, and Twitter users alike.

Some said the lack of social distancing in place at the beaches means we as a country are "doomed".

So far, coronavirus has killed over 43,000 Brits in hospitals across the country.
