Boris Johnson urges the public to not "overdo it" when lockdown is eased this weekend

Boris Johnson has urged the public not to "overdo it" this weekend as lockdown measures are relaxed in England.

July 4 is when pubs and restaurants are allowed to reopen to customers for the first time since March.

Cinema, hairdressers and other venues are also among the places allowed to reopen as the government kickstarts step three of its three-stage plan to lifting the country-wide lockdown.

But the Prime Minister wants the public to follow coronavirus guidance and ensure they "don't overdo it" this weekend, Downing Street has said.

The PM's official spokesman told a Westminster briefing: "(Mr Johnson) has said that he does want to see people able to go out and to enjoy themselves, but he is also very clear that everybody needs to be careful, stay alert and to follow the guidance.

"The guidance is there to keep everybody safe and to control the spread of the virus, and it is hugely important that everybody follows the advice and makes sure that they don't overdo it."

The spokesperson was then asked if Mr Johnson would be visiting a pub or restaurant on Saturday, to which they replied: "He's talked about his enthusiasm for a haircut and pint previously but I don't know exactly what he’s doing on Saturday yet."

Mr Johnson is expected to lead a Downing Street press conference on Friday ahead of the easing of restrictions the next day.

The easing of the measures will only apply in England as Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland move at a different pace.

This is also set to have a huge affect on Leicester, the first place to face a local lockdown due to a surge in  coronavirus  cases.

Leicester and some areas of Leicestershire have been forced to close schools and non-essential retail outlets again and cannot progress further for another two weeks.
