Boris Johnson urges parents to send children to school and says 'it is safe'

Boris Johnson insists "it is safe" for children to return to schools.

The Prime Minister, who himself has six kids, said there is "no need" for children to miss anymore education as primary schools partially reopen before the summer holidays

But there is only around five weeks left until the summer holidays and many parents remain fearful their children could catch Covid-19 at schools.

Speaking at the Downing Street press conference, Mr Johnson, 55, said: “It has been very good to see more and more children coming back to school this week.

“Some secondary school pupils now returning for face to face contact with their teachers ahead of the exams next year.

"But I want to say to all parents whose children are eligible to return in primary school – and there are loads of them – I want to assure you it is safe."

Millions of primary school pupils are back in class already. Primaries have been ordered to reopen for children in nursery, reception, and Years 1 and 6.

The Government believes the transition has been successful.

Mr Johnson added: “Some secondary school pupils now returning for face to face contact with their teachers ahead of the exams next year.

"But I want to say to all parents whose children are eligible to return in primary school – and there are loads of them – I want to assure you it is safe.

“There is no need for your kids to miss out on their education. I hope they will go to school.”

The children, now dubbed the "Covid Generation", break up for the six-week holiday on or around July 21.
