Boris Johnson urges families to 'act cautiously' as England avoids more Covid restrictions in 2021

Prime Minister Boris Johnson has urged families to “continue to act cautiously” after confirming there will be no new coronavirus restrictions in England this side of the new year.

Earlier today Health Secretary Sajid Javid told Sky News there would be no more restrictions in England despite there being more than 320,000 new coronavirus cases over Christmas.

Mr Javid said: "We won’t be taking any further measures, of course people should remain cautious as we approach new year celebrations and take a lateral flow test if that makes sense, celebrate outdoors if you can, have some ventilation indoors if you can.

The Prime Minister has now taken to Twitter to encourage more people to get their booster jabs and to urge caution when mixing with others.

He said: "We will continue to monitor the data carefully, but there will be no new restrictions introduced in England before the New Year.”

“However, I would urge everyone to continue to act cautiously given the rising number of Omicron cases.

“Most importantly I urge everyone to get their first, second or booster jab without delay to protect yourselves and your loved ones.”

But Labour shadow health secretary Wes Streeting has urged the Government to publish the advice and data ministers used to decide not to impose further Covid restrictions before January 1.

He said: “After a difficult 2021, people will be relieved to see no new restrictions ahead of the new year.

“With infection rates so high, the Government needs to come forward with a plan to enable schools and the NHS to run effectively through this latest wave.

“The Government should publish, as a matter of urgency, the very latest data on hospitalisations and NHS staff absence rates, as well as up to date advice from Sage, so that the public can be reassured that they are genuinely following the data and scientific advice and that Boris Johnson is not simply capitulating to his own opponents in the Tory Party.”
