Boris Johnson urged to name baby after Captain Tom Moore after emotional TV birthday message

Boris Johnson has been urged to name his new baby boy after Captain Tom Moore to mark his 100th birthday.

The heroic veteran has raised more than £29million for NHS Charities Together by walking laps of his garden in Marston Moretaine, Bedfordshire.

And the Prime Minister paid tribute to him on his big day in a video message on Thursday, saying his "heroic efforts have lifted the spirits of the entire nation" during the coronavirus crisis.

Boris' speech sparked Twitter users to urge him and his fiancée Carrie Symonds to call their son Tom after the little one was born yesterday.

He said in his speech: "I know I speak for the whole country when I say we wish you a very happy 100th birthday."

Boris added: "You've inspired the most incredible generosity raising £29million supporting the cause closest to all our hearts

"You've created a channel to enable millions to say a heartfelt thank you to the remarkable men and women in our NHS, who are doing the most astounding job, and whose courage and compassion will be why in the end we will defeat coronavirus."

Dozens rushed to Twitter urging Boris to suggest the baby name.

One tweeted: "If @BorisJohnson doesn't call his new baby son #Tom, I'll be outraged. Congratulations Boris, happy birthday."

"Boris' baby has the same birthday as Colonel Tom. Hope Boris calls him Tom," another posted.

"Congrats on your baby boy. Captain Tom will make a nice name," a fourth wrote.

Another tweeted: "I wouldn't be surprised if Boris' baby is called Thomas cos Captain Tom is 100 years young today."
