Boris Johnson urged to 'come clean' over Downing Street party by Sir Keir Starmer

The storm engulfing Prime Minister Boris Johnson over renewed claims about lockdown-busting gatherings in Downing Street has prompted Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer to call on him 'to come clean'.

Sir Keir said on twitter: “Boris Johnson, your deflections and distractions are absurd.

“Not only did you know about the parties in Downing Street, you attended them.

“Stop lying to the British public. It’s time to finally come clean.”

Pressure continues to be put on the PM after renewed claims from ITV which had a leaked email inviting Downing Street staff to a 'socially distanced' gathering during the first lockdown.

An email from Mr Johnson’s principal private secretary invited more than 100 Downing Street staff to an evening gathering on May 20 2020 when rules meant the public could only meet one other person outside.

Multiple reports – including from his former adviser Dominic Cummings – have suggested Mr Johnson attended the event with his wife Carrie.

Former Scottish Conservative leader Ruth Davidson condemned the alleged Downing Street drinks party in May 2020, saying “People are (rightly) furious.”

The Tory peer tweeted in response to health minister Ed Argar telling BBC Breakfast: “I can entirely understand why people who’ve lost loved ones, or people who’ve just had their lives hugely disrupted by these restrictions, are angry and upset by these allegations.”

Baroness Davidson said: “This line won’t survive 48 hrs. Nobody needs an official to tell them if they were at a boozy shindig in their own garden. People are (rightly) furious. They sacrificed so much – visiting sick or grieving relatives, funerals. What tf were any of these people thinking?”

On Monday, Boris Johnson ducked a question about the party claims, saying it was a matter for Sue Gray, the senior official leading an investigation into the allegations.
