Boris Johnson urged to break silence on free TV licences for over-75s

Boris Johnson is facing huge pressure in his own constituency from over-75s, with some warning they have been put off voting for him.

He has been the MP for Uxbridge and South Ruislip since 2015.

Great-grandfather-of-10 David Burton called on him to “do the right thing” and said pressure should be mounted on him to act.

“I’m angry,” he said. “Boris can do something about this.”

Mohammed Moobeen, 75, a retired business owner, said: “I just got the TV licence. I’m very angry. I want Boris to do something about this.

“I have lived in this country 30 years and paid my way. I am only on a small pension and I send money to my wife in Pakistan. I am struggling.”

Representatives from Age UK deliver a petition to 10 Downing Street calling on the BBC to carry on funding free TV licences for the over-75s (PA)

Retired doctor Parveen Rashid, 81, said: “I don’t watch the TV but I have it on to listen to. I live alone, I want somebody to be with me. So when it’s on, it’s like someone is in the house with me.”

Her carer Sheeba Robinson, 38, appealed to Mr Johnson to be kind to the older generation.

She said: “Surely he has older parents?”

Linda Smith, 73, is yet to have the benefit but said it was cruel to take it away from people who already had it.

She added: “It’s disgusting. He’s picking on the most vulnerable.”
