Boris Johnson updates Cabinet on July 19 lockdown lifting

Boris Johnson “re-emphasised the Government’s determination to ensure the road map is irreversible” during a meeting with his Cabinet on Tuesday, according to Downing Street.

A readout after the meeting said: “Cabinet concluded with a discussion on our ongoing response to Covid-19.

“The Prime Minister re-emphasised the Government’s determination to ensure the road map is irreversible and said he was constantly reviewing the data on cases, hospitalisations and deaths ahead of a decision on step four.”

England was set to enter Stage 4 of the lockdown lifting plan - with everything reopened and measures eased - on June 21.

But because of rising numbers of Covid cases across the UK that has been delayed for five weeks until July 19.

Test events held at sporting, music and other venues have not caused any Covid-19 outbreaks, the Government has said.

The FA Cup final at Wembley, the Brit Awards and the World Snooker Championships have been among the initial pilot events, with further ones planned.

Culture minister Nigel Huddleston, responding to an urgent question on the events research programme, told the Commons: “Although we are not yet in a position to publish the full report, I can assure the House that post-event data closely monitored have not shown any evidence of the events causing outbreaks.

“If they had, we would have communicated that information urgently.”
