Boris Johnson to visit Scotland during election campaign as Douglas Ross dodges 'asset' question

Boris Johnson is set to head to Scotland to campaign for the Tories during the Scottish Parliament election campaign in the lead up to the May vote.

The Scottish Conservative leader Douglas Ross confirmed the Prime Minister will travel up north, however he dodged a question on whether he would be an "asset" for his campaign or not.

Scots are set to go the polls on May 6 in what will be a very different election campaign than the usual ones.

Ballots will not be counted overnight as normal but will instead be tallied during office hours on the Friday and Saturday - meaning the final result could be announced 48 hours after polling places close at 10 pm on May 6.

Traditional door-to-door canvassing will be permitted on a limited scale from April 5 but only if covid cases are low enough.

Regional list candidate will also be permitted to travel across council areas even if lockdown restrictions are still in place.

Douglas Ross confirmed the Johnson would be heading to Scotland to campaign, but emphasised he was in charge.

He said: "The Prime Minister will be up before May but I'm the one leading the party here in Scotland.

"It's my team, my policies and I'm looking forward to the campaign in the next nine weeks."

Asked by The Sunday Show host Martin Geissler if Johnson if he'd be an asset to the Tories, the Moray MP laughed then said: "The Prime Minister will be up here, a number of other people will be up here but it's obviously going to be a different campaign than we previously had so visits will be limited for all parties.

"I'm very hopeful our positive message for Scotland - the plans we want to take to the people of Scotland and getting rid of this corrupt government at Holyrood - is a key priority that a lot of people will get behind."
