Boris Johnson to take summer holiday - with only weeks left before he quits No10

Boris Johnson will go on holiday from Wednesday despite having only a few weeks left in Downing Street.

The demob-happy Prime Minister is squeezing in a summer break before he is replaced in No10 by either Rishi Sunak or Liz Truss in September.

Mr Johnson will be on leave until the end of the week - but will still be in charge of running the country, his official spokesman said.

Details of where he spending his summer holiday are under wraps for security reasons.

He was forced to cut his holiday to Scotland short in April 2020 after the location was leaked to the media.

Asked who would be in charge while Mr Johnson was away, the PM's official spokesman said: "It will be the standard pattern.

"The Prime Minister will be updated as required... the Deputy Prime Minister [ Dominic Raab ] and, as ever with a Cabinet government, other ministers will be on hand to support as needed."

The spokesman refused to comment on whether it would be family jaunt with his wife Carrie and their small children Wilf and Romy.

Mr Johnson has previously faced criticism for lavish getaways, including his trip to Tory peer Zac Goldsmith's luxury hideaway in Spain last year.

A freebie trip was funded "provided free of charge by the Goldsmiths", according to the register of ministers' interests.

He was also ticked off by the Commons Standards Committee for failing to get to grips with the detail of who was funding a 2019 holiday to Mustique with his then-fiancee Carrie.

The Johnsons hosted a lavish party at the weekend to celebrate their marriage, which took place last year but was limited in size by the Covid rules at the time.

Asked if the holiday was a belated honeymoon, the PM's official spokesman said: "I don't know. I'm not getting into what type of holiday it is."

Critics have already accused Mr Johnson of having "basically checked out" from his job since he said he was quitting last month.

He had a lavish leaving bash at Chequers in July, and he has also been spotted flying a typhoon jet and hurling grenades on a military training exercise.
