Boris Johnson has told French President Emmanuel Macron that he believes the UK and Europe can still reach a deal on Brexit before October 31.
Speaking alongside Mr Macron as he arrived in Paris for Brexit talks, Mr Johnson said he had been "powerfully encouraged" by what he had heard from German Chancellor Angela Merkel when they met in Berlin on Wednesday.
Mr Macron added that it had "always been" his position to "respect the UK's decision" to leave the EU - but appeared to hint that he was not prepared to strike up a new deal.
The crucial talks come after the Prime Minister vowed to make Britain a “flying buttress for Europe” as he battles to build a warmer relationship with Mr Macron.
