Boris Johnson to make urgent Covid statement today

Boris Johnson will today give a statement to Parliament about Covid-19 - after the UK became just the fifth country in the world to pass 100,000 deaths.

The statement replaces one scheduled to have been made by Health Secretary Matt Hancock at around 1.15pm.

The statement in the commons will come after Boris Johnson faces MPs in Prime Minister's Questions at lunchtime.

And it will come after a statement by Home Secretary Priti Patel announcing new travel rules.

Mr Johnson has faced flak from his critics for his optimism in the face of a deadly pandemic and for being too slow to impose restrictions.

In July, he spoke of returning to “normality” before Christmas and called lockdowns a “nuclear deterrent” that he did not think he would have to use again.

He has since invoked lockdowns twice more, with England currently under restrictions that do not officially expire until the end of March.
