Boris Johnson to make new coronavirus announcement on Tuesday

Boris Johnson is to hold a No 10 press conference with the chief medical officer for England, Professor Chris Whitty, and the Government’s chief scientific adviser, Sir Patrick Vallance, at 5pm on Tuesday, Downing Street has said.

The press conference comes the day after Mr Johnson announced that England is going into a third national lockdown.

MPs are being recalled to Parliament to vote the lockdown into law on Wednesday.

The press conference will see the medical and scientific experts set out the latest rates of coronavirus infection, hospitalisation, admission to intensive care and deaths.

New financial support packages have already been announced on Tuesday and the Government is expected to announce new rules for people arriving in the UK today.

On Wednesday there will also be an announcement in Parliament on the future of BTecs as well as GCSE and A Level exams.

Speaking in the televised broadcast on Monday, Mr Johnson said: "I want to say to everyone right across the United Kingdom that I know how tough this is, I know how frustrated you are, I know that you have had more than enough of government guidance about defeating this virus.

"But now more than ever, we must pull together. You should follow the new rules from now, and they will become law in the early hours of Wednesday morning. Parliament will meet – largely remotely – later that day.

"I know that the devolved administrations in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland share my conviction this is a pivotal moment and they’re taking similar steps.

"The weeks ahead will be the hardest yet but I really do believe that we are entering the last phase of the struggle."
