Boris Johnson to make national address on Covid situation today

Downing Street is to give an urgent update on the coronavirus situation live on Monday afternoon.

The Prime Minister Boris Johnson will lead the press conference and is likely to be joined by medical and scientific experts.

It comes after the UK's key transport links were cut when nations across Europe - and the world - refused to allow entry to anyone from the UK.

The decision came after the UK alerted the world to the emergence of a new, more virulent strain of coronavirus.

The variant is spreading rapidly in the UK and is 70 per cent more infectious.

The mutation has already been reported in five other EU nations and experts say it could become the dominant strain around the world.

Over the weekend the Government brought in tough new Tier Four restrictions across London and he South East and scrapped the five-day relaxation of coronavirus rules.

The press conference will come after an emergency meeting of the Government's COBRA committee.

The Express reports the press conference will be 5pm.
