Boris Johnson 'to make his own way home' from Balmoral after resigning as Prime Minister

Boris Johnson will have to make his own way back from Scotland after officially stepping down as Prime Minister next week, it has been reported.

On Wednesday it was announced that either Liz Truss or Rishi Sunak would have to head north of the border to be appointed after Buckingham Palace said the Queen would remain at Balmoral instead of travelling to London.

The 96-year-old monarch is currently on her annual holiday to the Aberdeenshire estate.

It's expected either Truss or Sunak will start work as soon as they get on the plane from Aberdeen airport back down to London where they will give a speech on the steps of Downing Street.

Voting in the Tory leadership contest closes at 5pm on Friday and the winner will be announced on Monday. Johnson and his successor will then go to Balmoral for the appointment of the new prime minister, rather than Buckingham Palace.

The Queen will receive Johnson on Tuesday, September 6 at her Aberdeenshire home, where he will formally tender his resignation. This will be followed by an audience with the new Tory leader, where she or he will be invited to form a government.

According to the Sun Johnson will have to make his own way back from Scotland while the new PM will travel back on the official ministerial jet.

Boris Johnson is expected to address the nation for the last time as Prime Minister on Tuesday morning before heading to Aberdeenshire to meet the Queen.

His successor will give their first speech at around 4pm before appointing a new Cabinet. A day later on Wednesday lunchtime they will face Labour leader Keir Starmer for the first time at Prime Minister's Questions.
