Boris Johnson to make England lockdown lifting announcement on Monday afternoon

The Prime Minister is expected to make a lockdown announcement for England today, Monday, July 12.

Boris Johnson has said “we are tantalisingly close” to lifting the final swathe of coronavirus restrictions.

Today he is reported to be announcing when the next stage of unlocking England will go ahead.

Step 4 is the final stage in the Government's roadmap out of lockdown.

It has already been delayed once, with the initial date being put back by four weeks.

'Freedom Day' is likely to go ahead on July 19 - but the Prime Minister will confirm whether it will still go ahead on this day in today's address.

The PM said: “We are tantalisingly close to the final milestone in our road map out of lockdown, but the plan to restore our freedoms must come with a warning.

“While the phenomenal vaccine rollout has offered every adult some protection against the virus, and the crucial link between cases, hospitalisations and deaths is weakened, the global pandemic is not over yet.

“Cases will rise as we unlock, so as we confirm our plans today, our message will be clear. Caution is absolutely vital, and we must all take responsibility so we don’t undo our progress, ensuring we continue to protect our NHS.”

The Prime Minister is likely to make his address between 5pm-5.30pm, although Downing Street will confirm the exact time later on today.

Health Secretary Sajid Javid will announce the plans in Parliament this afternoon.
