Boris Johnson to make coronavirus announcement for England on Easter Monday - what will he say

Boris Johnson is expected to hold a coronavirus Downing Street briefing on Easter Monday.

In the announcement, it is widely reported that he will talk about a number of rules and regulations that the government will put in place as part of England's roadmap out of lockdown.

A number of cities across England will be trialling out vaccine passports for events - such as comedy nights and sporting events where large crowds of people are expected to attend.

The sporting events taking part in the trial include the Snooker World Championships in Sheffield, the FA Cup semi-final (Leicester v Southampton) in Wembley, three 10k runs in Hatfield Park, Hertfordshire and the Carabao Cup final (Manchester City v Tottenham) in Wembley.

It is expected that the PM will also talk about overseas travel in his announcement on Monday.

The government has already said that foreign holidays will not be allowed until May 17, at the earliest.

It is reported that a 'traffic light' system may come into force, with red, amber and green ratings for countries.

For countries under the red and amber categories, it'd mean that travellers will have to quarantine or isolate once they return from their holiday.

People coming back from countries in the green category will not have to quarantine or isolate, but may be required to take Covid tests before departing and on returning back into the UK.

The Prime Minister is also expected to cover the restrictions that will be lifted in a week's time, on April 12.

On this date, non-essential shops will reopen, as well as gyms, nail salons and hairdressers.

Outdoor attractions, such zoos, theme parks, and drive-in cinemas will resume, as well as outdoor dining such as beer gardens, and pubs and restaurants with outdoor areas.

In his Easter message, the Prime Minister acknowledged it had been a “very tough” year, but said the holiday brought fresh optimism.

“This has been a very tough 12 months. But, as ever, the arrival of Easter brings with it new hope,” he said.

“And, this year more than ever, it brings the promise of brighter days ahead for us all.”
