Boris Johnson to make a new Covid statement on Wednesday

Prime Minister Boris Johnson is to make a fresh statement on coronavirus on Wednesday afternoon.

Mr Johnson will speak to MPs in the House of Commons today.

His announcement comes after a briefing on Monday when Mr Johnson spoke to the UK in a live TV address.

At that time Mr Johnson said England would enter its next stage of lockdown lifting as planned on Monday, May 17.

That will include foreign and domestic holidays being allowed, hospitality businesses serving people indoors, schools stopping the use of face masks and people being allowed to gather indoors, stay over and even hug.

The Government has also announced the first 12 countries on the green list for foreign travel - where people from England can visit and return from without having to quarantine.

Mr Johnson will make a statement on the Covid latest and then face questions from MPs over the plan today, as well as questions about a planned inquiry into the handling of Covid.

The latest figures also show Covid infections rates rising in a third of England, while Government advisers say a third wave of Covid is inevitable.
