Boris Johnson to hold emergency Cobra meeting today after Liverpool terrorist attack

Prime Minister Boris Johnson will chair an emergency Cobra meeting this afternoon in response to the terrorist attack at Liverpool Women’s Hospital, Downing Street said.

The list of attendees has not yet been confirmed but it's expected that police and counterterrorism experts will attend.

It was confirmed this morning that the explosions outside the Liverpool hospital - which killed one and injured a taxi driver - was declared a terrorist attack.

Johnson’s spokesperson said that the prime minister's “thoughts remain with all those affected by the awful incident.”

He also gave his thanks to the emergency services “for their quick response, their professionalism, and also the police for their ongoing work into this live investigation”.

A Downing Street press conference will take place this afternoon where the Prime Minister will make more comments on the explosion and provide an update to the roll-out of the Covid-19 booster programme.

Earlier today, Head of Counter Terrorism Policing North West Russ Jackson said the man involved in the explosion died in the blast.

He had a homemade bomb on his person when he was picked up by a taxi.

As the car reached the drop-off point at Liverpool Women's hospital the bomb exploded.

Russ Jackson said in a press briefing: "Remarkably, the taxi driver escaped from the cab. He has been treated for the injuries he sustained and has now been released from hospital.

"Emergency services quickly attended the scene and Merseyside Fire and Rescue put out the fire following which it quickly became apparent that the passenger remained in the vehicle and was deceased.

"Following discussions with Ordnance Disposal Officers, we are able to confirm that this is being treated as the ignition of an explosive device,”

"Our enquiries also indicate that the device was brought into the cab by the passenger.

"We believe we know the identity of the passenger but cannot confirm this at this time."

Jackson noted that the man's motivations behind the attack are "yet to be understood".
